Jason Roberts is the founder and managing partner of Retirement Law Group (RLG), a firm serving plan sponsors, investment professionals and service providers in all aspects of retirement-related products and services. RLG’s network of leading ERISA, tax and securities lawyers is available to assist clients on a project, flat fee or hourly basis.
In addition to his role at RLG, Jason is the founder and CEO of Pension Resource Institute, LLC (PRI), an ERISA consulting firm that helps banks, broker-dealers and registered investment advisers implement and maintain profitable strategies for serving retirement investors. PRI was founded on the idea that compliance with retirement regulations should be accessible and affordable.
Prior to founding RLG and PRI, Jason was a partner and co-chair of the Financial Services Group at a leading ERISA law firm and the head of the Investment Fiduciary practice for a national securities law firm.
Jason has published numerous articles focusing on ERISA and securities compliance, fiduciary best practices and is a frequent speaker at retirement plan and financial industry conferences. He is a contributing author and faculty member for the Practicing Law Institute. Jason has been repeatedly recognized as one of the “100 Most Influential in Defined Contribution” by the 401(k) Wire and a “Rising Star” by SuperLawyers Magazine and was selected by InvestmentNews as one of the Top 40 Advisors and Associated Professionals under 40. The Wall Street Journal also tapped Jason for its Ask the Experts series answering readers’ questions relating to the DOL Fiduciary Regulation.
Jason received his B.S.B.A in Finance & Banking from the University of Missouri and his J.D. from UCLA Law School.
Outside of work, you can find Jason deep sea fishing, tending a wide range fresh produce in his garden, cooking, and spending time with his wife, Val.

Dean J. Scoular is an attorney that practices exclusively Employee Benefits law. He provides analysis and advice regarding the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the Internal Revenue Code.
Dean’s practice covers a wide range of employee plans including: Defined Contribution (401(k), Profit Sharing, Money Purchase, Stock Bonus), Defined Benefit / Cash Balance, Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP), 403(b) plans, Non-qualified Deferred Compensation Plans, Governmental & Non-ERISA plans (including church plans), and health plans such as Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Dean provides advice regarding plan design, participant communications, representation during governmental investigations and audits, merger and acquisition analysis regarding employee benefit related issues, plan corrections through governmental agencies, ESOP transactions from feasibility through closing, and analysis and advice regarding ongoing plan operations.
Prior to joining RLG, Dean worked for three AmLaw 150 law firms, a boutique Employee Benefits law firm, a Fortune 75 insurance company, and the Internal Revenue Service. Dean has over 20 years of experience practicing employee benefits law as well as 14 years of plan administration background prior to graduating from law school. Dean is a frequent lecturer and author regarding employee benefit issues as well as an Adjunct Professor on employee benefit topics.
Dean has a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Wyoming and his J.D. cum laude from the Saint Louis University School of Law. Dean is licensed to practice in Missouri and Ohio.
In his spare time, Dean enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren as well as taking care of his horses and dogs.

Steve has been practicing law for over 30 years. After graduating from George Washington University Law School with High Honors, he began his legal career with the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division, in Washington, D.C. Steve returned to his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and continued his government service in the Office of the District Counsel, Internal Revenue Service. During this time, he earned a Master of Laws (in Taxation) degree from Georgetown University.
After completing government service, Steve entered the private practice of law. He has represented both privately-held family businesses and public companies. His experience in employee benefits, includes executive compensation planning and all types of tax-advantaged compensation and fringe benefit plans. He has counseled clients on establishing and maintaining pension, profit sharing, 401(k), 403(b), ESOP, cross-tested, new comparability, Keogh, SEP-IRA and IRA plans, cafeteria plans, Rabbi Trusts, Secular Trusts, Qualified and Non-Qualified Stock Option Plans, Government and Exempt Organization 457 Plans. He represents clients undergoing Internal Revenue Service or Department of Labor audits, or who need to correct retirement plan mistakes and violations prior to the commencement of an audit.
Steve also advises broker-dealers, investment advisors, record-keepers and TPAs on all aspects of ERISA law. Steve is licensed to practice in California.
When he is not working, Steve spends his time hiking, golfing and enjoying San Diego.
